How To Completely Understand Your Target Demographics

I’ve written many blogs that talk about the way you write in copywriting versus how you write to your target audience. I even go as far as to talk about how to write in the tone of your target audience in a previous blog. However, in order to do any of these things, you have to understand your audience FULLY – inside and out. And there’s no better way to do this than with target demographics

What Exactly Are Demographics?

Demographics are more or less generalized characteristics of your target audience based off of the observation of their behavior. When you know the characteristics of your target audience, you’ll know who belongs in this group and who doesn’t.

For example, you’re not going to write sales ads about barbecue meats and target a vegan demographic, are you?

Maybe, if you want them to BEEF with you… (LOL sorry…).

Chances are, none of them would click, let alone buy on your ad because they’d …have a BONE to pick with you. (LMFAO).

And if they don’t buy, you make no money. In other words… you’d be DEAD MEAT. (Last one, I promise).

But seriously…

In order to fully understand your demographics, you’d have to characteristics such as these:

  • Age
  • Race
  • Sex
  • Location (Geographical)
  • Language
  • Political Affiliation
  • Occupation
  • Income
  • EducationAnd so on.

Why Is Demographics So Important?

Why is knowing everything you can about your target audience’s demographics so important when it comes to writing copy?

Well, there may be groups within your target audience that you may want to consider. For instance, you may be targeting homeowners, but if you want to target those who one mansions as opposed to those who own a nice, one-story house, you’ve got to plan accordingly.

That being said, demographics are important mainly because you’ll know exactly how to sell to them.

How To Find The Demographics of Your Target Audience

Ever heard the saying: “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer?”

When it comes to identifying demographics, you REALLY want to pay attention to your “enemies,” or in this case – your competitors.

Because it’s your competitor’s sites that will have all of your soon-to-be customers. Believe it or not, this is a good thing!

Let me explain…

When you’re browsing around on a competitor’s website and they’ve successfully built a following, you’re not there just to develop envy. You’re there to see what works and what doesn’t.

Ask yourself:

Why are all of your ideal clients going to THIS website in particular?

What’s so awesome about their landing page and content?

How are they communicating to their followers?

Where are they posting their ads?

Understand that if your competitors are successful, they know exactly how to get what they want out of your target audience, based on the demographics. Get an in-depth understanding of why your competitors are so successful. And guess what? You no longer have to waste time trying to figure out what it is they’re doing right. At that point, all you’d have to do is remodel your strategy to theirs. Kinda like stealing the hubcap as opposed to reinventing the wheel!
